The Work Order Management companion product facilitates the process of modifying products from their original form into a more useful form, based on customer requirements. This includes transforming a basic material or group of materials into a finished product by completing a series of steps that are value-added services provided by outside vendors. Typical value add processes are: assembling a group of parts into one part, such as a toilet, or painting an unfinished piece, such as a rocking chair.
Work order entry is the process of creating a record of processes that need to be completed to modify the product. You enter a step, determine how long it takes to complete, and identify the materials required to complete it. You can perform the work in house, or send it to an outside vendor for processing. If you send it to an outside vendor, you need to record the vendor's setup costs, processing costs, and any freight and handling charges, if you do not transport your own goods.
After you enter a work order, you need to monitor it to ensure that the materials are available when you need them, that the start and completion dates are realistic, and that you are able to deliver the finished product to the customer when they have requested it. The system provides a number of queues, inquiries, and reports to assist you in doing this.
