Setting Up Required Product Relationships

When you sell products in your warehouse some of those products have additional items that are essential to purchase with the parent product and they must "tag along" with the parent product as a required item. These tag-along items must be purchased with the parent product.

For example, if you sell a specialty light fixture, there may be bulbs that only work in that fixture. Therefore, you must indicate in the Product Maintenance product record which items are required for those products. You can assist the salesperson by specifying required products, and then the system displays a list of items for the salesperson to add to the order.

Use the Related Products Display Mode control maintenance record to indicate how you want the required item product information to display in order entry: automatically or at a prompt.

Note: The Suggested Purchase Order Queue picks up all required and related items when stock levels reach the order point.

To setup a product as a required item for another product:

  1. Display the parent product for which you want to define a required item.

  2. From the Additional Data menu, select Product Relationship to display the Product Relationship Maintenance window.

  3. From the Relationship Types area, click the Valid Relationship Type that you want to assign a required item to.

Note: These types are set in the Valid Product Relationship Typescontrol maintenance record.

  1. In the Related Item Product Description field, enter the product which you would like sales personnel to add to the sales order when ordering the parent product.

The Statusfield populates based on the status of the related product according to the product file in Product Maintenance.

  1. In the Allowed Branches field, indicate which branches in your company that you want to permit this required item to be ordered.

  2. In the Quantity field, enter the minimum quantity the customer must order with the parent product. This entry must be a whole number.

  3. In the Required field, click the check box to indicate that this item is required to be purchased with the parent product.

  4. In the Split Shipment field, indicate if the required item can be shipped separately from the parent product. If Split Shipment is allowed, then the item can be shipped after the parent product, but not before.

Generally for required items, this check box is left unchecked because you want required items to be shipped with the parent product.

  1. Repeat steps 3 - 8 to add other required product options.

  2. Click the x to close the window and at the prompt, click Yes to save the changes.

  3. Close the window to save the settings and exit this window.
