For Web Commerce sites, use drill categories, or drill downs, to organize the products you offer for sale on your web site. These categories separate your products into logical groups allowing your web site users to browse and order products easily by group, such as Plumbing and Lighting. You can then create subcategories to further define these product categories and let your users drill in to each area and find the item they want to order. Drill categories can be set company-wide or to be customer-specific.
You must be assigned the PRODUCT.CAT.MAINT authorization key to create drill categories and subcategories.
Use drill categories to offer different sets of products to different customer types. For example, you could define a drill category specific to your electrical customers that displays only products applicable to the electrical industry. After a customer logs in, the company-wide categories display, unless customer-specific categories are defined.
The following tasks are common for using and setting up drill categories for level 2 web sites:
Companion products that display products in a web site interface work with these product drill categories to allow access to the products more easily. Without these categories set up, products are still accessible, but are not grouped.
As of Release 9.0.1, the following companion products use drill categories:
Eclipse Mobile - Level 3 or higher.
Eclipse Web Commerce - Level 2 or higher.
