The system requires that you process all the materials in a step before you can move on to the next step. If you do not have all of the raw materials available when you start a work order, you can move a line item's quantity or part of the quantity to a new or different step and split up the step for quicker processing.
For example, you need 25 widgets to make 25 of a finished product in Step 1 of a 4 step process, but you have only 12 on hand. You transfer the remaining 13 widgets to Step 5 with a later start date and process the original 12 widgets through Step 1. Then, when the 13 widgets are available, send them through the same process using Step 5.
Important: You cannot move quantities on work order templates, nor can you move quantities to canceled steps. |
There are two ways to move material to another process step.
Use the Stage Material button, during the assembly, process to have the system create a new step with the material quantity that is currently unavailable. You set a date for the new step.
Use the Split Quantities option to move the material in the quantity that you specify when you don't have the needed material for the finished product.
To use the Stage Material button:
Open the work order for which you want to move materials.
Select the line item and enter the quantity for the work order. This is assuming that the quantity you entered is more than is available.
Select the Stage Material button. The system displays the New date box.
Note: If there is sufficient material to complete the work order, you cannot stage the material. The system displays a message that there is already enough quantity.
Enter the date that the material will be available.
Click OK. The system creates a new step with the currently unavailable material on the new date.
To use the Split Quantities option:
Open the work order for which you want to move materials.
Select the line item for which you need to move material based on availability.
Right-click on a line item from the Quantity In column and select Split Quantities to display the split quantities window.
In the Quantity In field, change the quantity to the amount you can currently fulfill. For example, the customer orders 75 items, but the warehouse only has enough product to fulfill 50 of the finished product. Change this Quantity In field to 50. The system prompts you to enter a new ship date for the remaining 25 items.
At the prompt, enter the ship date for the quantity that is being split to a new line item.
The system closes the Split Quantities window and updates the line item quantities for both the line item with availability and the new line item that fulfills the remaining order.
In addition to using the standard Split Quantities option, you can use the Make Available process to move quantities when there is enough available material to complete at least one assembly.
Note: This feature added in Release 9.0.3.15.
To move material using Make Available:
Open the work order for which you want to move materials.
Select the line item for which you need to move material based on availability.
If material is available, the
Make Available option activates.
Use the Make Available Quantity field to indicate how much material you want to move. The system defaults to the quantity that is available.
Use the New Completion Date For Remaining Quantity field to indicate when the work order will be complete based on the new material.
Click OK to return to the Work Order Entry window.
